Amazon has opened a new corporate base in Manchester as it continues to ramp up its presence in the North.

It employs about 29,500 people across the UK.

A spokesman said the choice of Manchester for the new office reflected the city’s growing reputation for ‘technology expertise and fast-growing tech companies’, adding that there would be a ‘broad range’ of roles on offer, with vacancies in software engineering, marketing and sales.

Amazon is also seeking to attract graduates and will work on projects with Manchester’s universities and the Institute of Coding, a government-backed initiative based in the city.

Doug Gurr, Amazon’s UK boss, said: ‘I am delighted we’re opening our first corporate office in the North of England today.

‘Manchester offers an incredible talent pool, a thriving hub of fast-growing UK tech start-ups and is a centre of academic and intellectual excellence.’
