A brave pensioner fought off a mugger by putting his fists up to punch him during an attempted cashpoint robbery outside a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The 77-year-old man wearing a flat cap and glasses was using the machine when a crook demanded money, but he fought back and threw punches at his attacker. 

It was caught on CCTV in the Roath area of Cardiff on February 5, with footage showing the man getting out of his Chevrolet Aveo and approaching the machine.

After retrieving his money he was approached by the would-be robber who pushed him to the chest, but the older man fought back and put his fists up.

South Wales Police said the suspect, who was carrying a black rucksack, then fled empty-handed from the scene following the attempted robbery at 6am.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: ‘A 77-year-old man was using the cash machine outside Sainsbury’s at approximately 6am on Wednesday, February 5, when he was approached by an unknown white male demanding cash and his bank card.

‘The victim bravely fought off the suspect who made off empty-handed towards the path leading to Colchester Avenue.’

Detective Constable Stephen Mayne added: ‘The victim in this case showed great bravery, however he has been left shaken.

‘We would encourage anyone who knows him to please come forward.’

Police said the suspect was wearing a high-vis vest and black hat with a white motif on the front. Witnesses or anyone with information should call South Wales Police.
