‘I’m sad you had a bad time’: Seinfeld star Jason Alexander hits back after a fan was left ‘humiliated and ashamed’ after he called her a ‘pathetic woman’ at Canberra comedy gig

Jason Alexander has responded to a fan who said she felt ‘humiliated’ after he called her a ‘sad, pathetic woman’ at his at comedy gig on Thursday.

The 60-year-old shared a series of tweets replying to the fan, named Bethany Williams, who claims he made the comments during his Q&A session at the Canberra Theatre Centre.

Bethany originally Tweeted: ‘Tonight I went to see @IJasonAlexander. He invited audience questions about Seinfeld, and I nervously put up my hand and asked about his funniest/most memorable moment behind the scenes.

‘His response? “Oh, you sad, pathetic woman”. It’s sad when someone you adore is actually a jerk.’

The Seinfeld actor replied to her directly via his official Twitter, writing over a number of posts: ‘Dear Bethany, I am so sad that for some reason you took my comment with any serious intent.

‘I make fun of myself all night. I make fun of things like people with tattoos (which I have no real objection to). I “play” with people all night in the spirit of good fun and it seems the vast majority understand and appreciate that spirit.

‘For some reason you took my silly comment with real intent. I don’t know why. But it was clearly a misunderstanding. I think I actually went on to answer your question, I think. I may be confusing it with another show’.

Bethany again replied, writing: ‘Unfortunately Jason, after I asked my question, you looked annoyed, then your exact words were “you sad, pathetic woman”.

‘You didn’t answer. You dismissed me, and went straight to another question, about the various relationships you had in the show. You answered that question.’

She continued: ‘Your flippant “silly” comment actually humiliated me. I was overcome with embarrassment and felt really ashamed.

‘It hurt all the more that I had been such a huge fan of yours, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be in the same room as you. Let alone to ask you a question’.

Jason responded once more to the fan, writing: ‘Again, I’m sad to hear that. With the exception of some heartfelt stories none of my stuff is meant to be taken as real. I can only tell you I’m sad you had a bad time. Not much more I can say.’

Bethany later told the Sydney Morning Herald of the incident:  ‘He just kind of went, “Ugh, you’re a sad, pathetic woman”.

‘Then he just moved on and didn’t answer my question. I think people were pretty shocked. I was completely humiliated. He belittled me in front of a crowded theatre.’

She added: ‘To then insult me for no reason… that was the most disappointing part of it. I don’t care who you are, you don’t treat people like that’.
