The stark reality of Britain’s knife crime epidemic has been laid bare in a BBC documentary which featured harrowing footage of a man who had been stabbed.

The young man woke up dazed and confused as a 15-strong team of medics battled to save his life at Aintree Hospital’s major trauma centre in Merseyside.

Viewers watched in horror as he was then rushed to the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for emergency open heart surgery after the blade pierced heart, preventing it from beating properly.

Figures for knife crime nationally have hit a record high and Merseyside has seen incidents double in the last five years.

BBC Two’s Hospital showed distressing footage of the young man who arrived by emergency helicopter after being stabbed – one of three stabbings to arrive during the day.

The show showed him being sedated before the team scanned him to find the full extent of the internal damage and gave him a transfusion of eight units of blood.

The blade had reached the patient’s heart and caused bleeding into its protective sac, preventing his heart from beating properly.

With his life hanging in the balance, he was blue-lit 15 minutes across the city to the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital for emergency open heart surgery.

There, a cardiac surgeon released the pressure around his heart, saving his life.

Cardiac surgeon Julius Asante-Siaw told the show: ‘He’s about half-a-centimetre away of being dead at the scene.’

Knife crime in England and Wales hit a record high in the year to September, up by 7 per cent on the previous 12 months.

Police-recorded offences involving a knife or sharp instrument rose to 44,771, according to figures released in January by the Office for National Statistics.

This is the highest on record, up from 41,858 in the previous 12 months and 46% more than when comparable records began in the year ending March 2011, at 30,620.

The 2019 London murder rate of 137 broke last year’s total of 133 by early December – and is the highest level recorded since 2008 when Scotland Yard investigated 154 deaths

But the total number of homicides recorded by police fell by 6 per cent, from 654 to 617. There was also a 20 per cent drop in homicides where a knife or sharp instrument was used, to 221 offences, mainly driven by a decrease in London.

The figures prompted Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan to reiterate calls for the Government to take ‘urgent action’ to ‘break the spiral of violence’.

And they come after a wave of bloodshed on the street of the capital last year, which saw 147 murders, in a total compiled by MailOnline.

Figures from the Crime Survey for England and Wales, also released alongside the police recorded statistics, showed continued rises in overall fraud, with a 9 per cent increase – to 3.8 million offences – in the year ending September 2019, driven by a rise in ‘bank and credit account fraud’.
