No Time To Die director reveals 007 is seen after five years of being retired from MI6

No Time To Die’s director likens James Bond to ‘a wounded animal’… as he reveals the film catches up with 007 five years after retiring from MI6

A new behind-the-scenes featurette for James Bond’s No Time To Die revealed some surprising details about the legendary spy upon its release Tuesday.

The film’s director Cary Joji Fukunaga told audiences that Agent 007 has in fact been out of the action for a full five years since the harrowing events of the last film in the series, 2015’s Spectre.

As opposed to many other films in the series that catch up with the suave spy totally on point and in his element at the outset, sipping a martini and wooing the ladies, No Time To Die promises to more deeply explore Bond’s darker, more vulnerable side, as the more recent entries have done.

‘Where is he? After five years of retirement, who has he become?’ Fukunaga, 42, asks in the clip.

‘He’s sort of a wounded animal, struggling with his role as a double-o. The world has changed. The rules of engagement aren’t what they used to be. The rules of espionage are darker in this era of asymmetric warfare.

What’s more, he says, ‘The people close to Bond – those who he considers to be family – are at great risk.

‘And now there’s someone new out there… More dangerous than anyone he’s ever encountered. Whoever they are, they’re smarter and stronger than Spectre,’ Fukunaga, famous for his work on the series True Detective as well as the acclaimed film Beasts Of No Nation, continued.
