Man is branded ‘selfish’ for taking over the house on Kirstie and Phil’s Love It Or List It

A man who admitted to taking over his house with his contraptions was branded ‘selfish’ after his wife revealed since retiring, she spends most of her time in a dark dining room, tiny bedroom and cramped bathroom in Kirstie and Phil’s Love It Or List It.

Last night’s episode of the Channel 4 show featured Bill and Pippa Lindley from Ashtead, Surrey, whose house was literally divided in two – the original house at one side and a new annex with separate kitchen and bathroom for visiting guests on the other.

But while Pippa wasn’t taken with either part of the house and referred to it as a ‘tatty little bungalow’, cyber security expert Bill had inadvertently taken over their detached bungalow – and wasn’t keen to put it on the market.

And viewers were quick to take to Twitter – joking they think Bill should be put up for sale rather than the property.

‘I think Pippa needs to List Bill and love someone else. What are you doing? Move on and enjoy your retirement without this awful selfish bloke,’ wrote one, while a second added: ‘It’s not a new house they need, it’s a divorce.’

A third agreed: ‘Pippa needs to list Bill, love someone else and enjoy retirement without this selfish egotistical arrogant man #wasteoftime.’

During the episode, Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer revealed Pippa worked long hours as a civil servant for many years, and at this time, Bill worked tirelessly from home setting up to his business. It meant he took over the house and turned it into his very own control centre.

‘While I had the whole place to myself it became a little bit more biased towards my tastes rather than hers,’ he admitted. ‘The house suits me. I like it very much. I like the location of the house and the friends around.’

However, since retiring and being at home more, Pippa revealed things had reached boiling point.

She explained how she’s spending most of her time in the dark dining room, which she says ‘looks like an oriental restaurant,’ the cramped, dated bathroom, and tiny bedroom – but still, Bill was keen to stay put in the house.

‘This man is so deliberately uninterested in his wife, her needs, and her interests that he doesn’t give two hoots about what she’d like in her own home,’ wrote one on Twitter. ‘Go buy your own place Pippa, you deserve it.’

A second commented: ‘Think this week’s #LIOLI should be renamed Love Him Or Leave Him. And I know what I’d do…’ while a third added: ‘Awwww, Pippa is every woman who has put everyone before before herself since forever.’

With it all too much for Pippa to cope with, and a bedroom too small to even hold a decent sized bed, Bill came up with several ingenious inventions to fix it – including a king size mattress on a double bed, lighting attached to the bed poles and a shelf in her wardrobe for his tea.

‘Another one of Bill’s rooms,’ said Phil, as the experts looked around. ‘How many desks? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6! She’s been away at work and he’s occupied the house and he’s spread out,’ to which Kirstie added: ‘You’re telling me! He’s taken over the whole thing – it’s ridiculous!’

Kirstie soon set to work, converting what was once a dark cramped room with lights taped to bedframes and no room for a bedside table into a stunning, spacious master bedroom.

Meanwhile, with a simple lick of paint, de-cluttering and a new floor, the dark dining room came alive. But, despite the expert’s best efforts, come the end of the episode, it appeared Bill finally listened his wife’s view and agreed to list the property.

And while some viewers criticised Bill’s attitude throughout the programme, others enjoyed the couple’s relationship – with Kirstie even labelling them ‘jokers’.

‘Lovely couple, so quirky! House still looks very dated though..’ wrote one, while a second penned: ‘I just adore the way Bill and Pippa are. I wish they had their own show! He’s hilarious. And Pippa’s been so busy working he has taken over the home. 7 desks 2 pianos.’

While some criticised Bill's attitude, others branded them a 'lovely couple' and joked they need their own show (pictured)
