Maxim Baldry takes the lead in Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings prequel series
Maxim Baldry (Last Christmas, Years and Years) has officially signed on to play a leading role in Amazon Prime’s prequel series to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
The 24-year-old half-Russian Englishman will portray a mystery role in the multi-season series set during Middle Earth’s Second Age – thousands of years before the events of the trilogy and The Hobbit, according to Deadline.
The Melodie Saviour frontman was last seen guest-starring as Dr. John Polidori in the February 16th episode of BBC One’s Doctor Who – titled ‘The Haunting of Villa Diodati’ – centered on literary greats like Mary Shelley in 1816.

It comes two months after Variety reported Welsh starlet Morfydd Clark (His Dark Materials) was cast as the ring-bearing royal elf Galadriel – a role originally popularized by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.
Amazon’s $1B LOTR series also features the same power-hungry Ainur antagonist Sauron, who built his tower Barad-dûr in Mordor during the Second Age (spanning 3,441 years).
‘The Tolkien Estate will insist that the main shape of the Second Age is not altered. Sauron invades Eriador, is forced back by a Númenorean expedition, and returns to Númenor,’ Tolkien scholar Tom Shippey told IndieWire back in August.
