And some items have surged to the top of people’s shopping lists, with toilet roll now seen as a prized possession.

But one lorry driver has taken it a step further by strapping a single pack of Velvet to the back of his truck.

The traffic management foreman from Kent added: ‘I nearly wet myself, what a funny thing to see on the back of a lorry when supermarket shelves are empty. Should have had an armed escort.’

One social media user joked: ‘He had a full load when he left the depo 10 minutes ago.’

Another commented: ‘This is the best video I have seen.’

And one man added: ‘My trailer is enclosed so wouldn’t have bothered with the strap.’

Shoppers across the world have been filmed stockpiling toilet roll and fighting over packs in supermarkets amid coronavirus fears.

The government last week urged calm as it emerged some supermarkets were warning of shortages of drugs, hand sanitiser and toilet roll.

On Wednesday a motorist was fined £300 after being caught in a van which was more than a tonne overweight because he had stockpiled toilet roll.

The driver was stopped by officers from the Driver and Vehicles Standards Agency at the Blackwall Tunnel in London.

He was found with a van-load of toilet roll, which people have been panic-buying amid the coronavirus crisis.

The DVSA shared a photograph of the driver’s van on social media, tweeting: ‘This van driver was taking stocking up on toilet and kitchen rolls to the extreme.

‘We stopped this vehicle at Blackwall Tunnel and found it was more than a tonne overweight.

‘The driver is £300 lighter from the fine we issued him. Keeping you safe #toiletrollcrisis.’
