Marvel movie set to shoot in Sydney canned over coronavirus fears


Superheroes can’t save it! Filming of Marvel’s Shang-Chi in Sydney has been postponed over coronavirus fears as director goes into self-isolation on the advice of his doctor

There is bad news from the Marvel film universe. 

An upcoming superhero film from the franchise, Shang-Chi, has postponed production over coronavirus fears. 

Filming was underway at Fox Studios in Sydney, however director Destin Daniel Cretton has gone into self-isolation after seeking medical advice.

Variety magazine reports that the 41-year-old ‘is a new father and wanted to exercise additional caution’. 

The movie stars Awkwafina and Tony Leung Chiu-wai and was set to be released in February 2021. 

Numerous other movies have shifted their release dates or halted production after the outbreak was officially classified as a pandemic.

Fast & Furious sequel F9 has been the latest big release to be pushed back, as Hollywood rushes to react to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez film was due to hit screens in May 2020, but has now been delayed to April 3 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Thursday morning.

The Fast and Furious movies are always big earners at the domestic and international box office and the absence of F9 will impact the 2020 box office in a major way.

The move came just hours after director John Krasinski and Paramount announced they are delaying the release of a A Quiet Place Part II because of the pandemic.    

Netflix movie The Prom has also shut down production, with the Ryan Murphy helmed Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman starring project suspending production.

Last week MGM pushed the latest James Bond No Time To Die from April to November.
