A mother has been praised for her ‘genius’ way of preventing her children getting coronavirus.

After it was announced yesterday that all schools would remain open despite the rapid spread of the virus, mum-of-three Nix, from Newcastle, came up with a clever trick for making her children wash their hands throughout the day.

Posting in the Mrs Hinch’s Cleaning Army Facebook group, Nix revealed she draws emojis on her children’s hands in felt tip pen and checks that they are completely clean when they return home.

The method quickly gained attention after Nix shared a picture of her three children’s arms showing hearts, smiley faces, and poo emojis drawn on their hands.

She penned: ‘Drew emojis on my kids’ hands this morning and told them I want to see them washed off by pick up so I know they’re washing their hands.’

The post received nearly 6,000 likes and nearly 600 comments from other group members who thought the idea was ‘amazing and brilliant’.

Another agreed: ‘Had to screen shot and share!! What a fantastic idea!!!’

A third said: These kind of tips, my love, are just what we need. Exceptional idea.’

The mother also revealed in the comments that she was particularly concerned that her son who’s ‘forever covered in mud’ washes his hands while at school.

She wrote: ‘My eldest boy is nine and hates getting his hands dirty so wasn’t too worried about him. It’s my middle boy who’s seven and is a stereotypical clart-loving boy. He’s forever covered in mud. (Hence the poop emojis).’

The NHS is encouraging the public to vigorously wash their hands with soap and water and to avoid touching their faces in an effort to control the spread of the disease.

Yesterday, Boris Johnson announced that schools across the country would remain open, despite other countries such as Ireland, Austria, Turkey and Norway closing them down.

The Prime Minister and his chief medical advisors decided to hold back these responses in an effort to delay the peak of the ‘worst public health crisis for a generation’, and instead recommended only stopping school trips abroad.
