Nationwide to open its doors early for elderly customers who are more at risk from the coronavirus pandemic

Nationwide building society is opening more than 100 of its branches an hour early to help those more at risk from coronavirus

Britain’s biggest building society is opening more than 100 of its branches an hour early to help those more at risk from the coronavirus pandemic.

Nationwide said it is trialling a new time so older people and those with underlying health conditions can manage their money ‘in a safe environment’.  Customers will be able to use the facilities first, benefiting from enhanced cleaning that branches will undergo each evening.

The trial will start today, with branches opening at 8am instead of 9am, from Monday to Friday.

If successful, the trial could be extended to more branches.

Nationwide is also encouraging customers to sign up for online and mobile banking where possible, as more people stay at home.

The move is just one of many being taken by major banks and building societies, which also include mortgage repayment holidays and penalty-free access to fixed savings accounts.
