Costs are predicted to soar by 30 per cent because many workers and children will be stuck indoors, according to Energyhelpline.

The comparison site said the average £98 per month UK energy bill will rise by £29 for those working from home with children whose schools have closed. 

The firm calls for companies to give home workers an extra £1 per day to cover costs, but says you can save up to 33 per cent by switching to a better deal.

Co-founder Mark Todd adds: ‘Naturally, the increase is not likely to be as much for older people who tend to stay in more anyway, but they will be affected as they self-isolate.’
