The Queen pays tribute to NHS workers as Prince Edward claps

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle fell flat as they shared emojis on Instagram for the Clap for Carers public display today, while Prince William and Kate Middleton posted an adorable video of their children applauding.

The Duke, 35, and Duchess of Sussex, 38,  who are due to step down from life as senior royals in a matter of days, posted about the hashtag on their Instagram stories, writing: ‘Thank you for all that you continue to do! Applauding you from across the pond.’

But while Prince Harry and Meghan opted for an impersonal approach with their post, other members of the royal family shared heart-felt video messages.

The Cambridges posted a video of their children Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and Prince Louis, 1, applauding, while Prince Edward also joined his family for a round of applause.

Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte led hundreds of thousands of Britons in showing their appreciation for the NHS who are slaving away day and night to try to stem the number of deaths from the lethal coronavirus.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge shared a video on Instagram of the young Royals – six, four and one respectively – laughing and clapping together in a garden.

The post on Kensington Palace’s account read: ‘To all the doctors, nurses, carers, GPs, pharmacists, volunteers and other NHS staff working tirelessly to help those affected by #COVID19: thank you.

And the Queen also paid tribute to ‘scientists, medical practitioners and emergency services’ in an Instagram post on her official page today.

The account also shared a video of Prince Edward with Sophie Wessex and their children Lady Louise and Viscount James, who all clapped after Edward paid tribute to workers.

In the short video clip, which had been filmed outside their front door today, Edward could be heard paying tribute to frontline workers.

He said: ‘So from all of us just a huge thank you to so many of you working on the frontline – you’re really appreciated keep up the fantastic work.’

The family could then be seen applauding as they joined in with the NHS Clap for Carers public display.

Alongside the images, the couple wrote: ‘

The Prince of Wales, 71, has a ‘mild’ form of the illness and is on the Balmoral estate with his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, who has tested negative and is without any symptoms of the virus, which has killed 465 and infected 9,500 more in the UK so far.

But he has been working at his desk ‘as usual’ today despite having the infection as his aides try to trace anyone who met him over the past fortnight to warn them they may have been exposed.

In a message shared on the royal family's official Instagram account, the Queen said: 'We are enormously thankful for the expertise and commitment of our scientists, medical practitioners and emergency and public services.'

Clarence House tweeted a picture of him in the West Midlands on February 18 with the message: Thank you for all your ‘Get Well Soon’ messages for His Royal Highness. He is enormously touched by your kind words.

The London Eye, the Wembley Arch, the Royal Albert Hall, the Principality Stadium and Lincoln Cathedral were among the landmarks lit a vivid ‘NHS blue’ during the emotional salute.

The Clap For Carers campaign, which started online, has been staged because ‘during these unprecedented times they need to know we are grateful’, the organisers said.

It follows similar moves in Italy and Spain – which have the world’s highest death tolls – which created astonishing scenes earlier this month as they applauded from terraces in the countries’ cities.
