THE WHITE JEANS TYPE

There are some people who are constitutionally neat, clean and well presented. Their hair looks the same at 5pm as it did at 9am. They have houses with clear surfaces and well-ordered spice racks.

These are white jean types. I am not in this club. I admire, worship even, these people from afar, but I will never qualify to join them. I’ve learned to accept my messiness, but when I see someone in white jeans, I go a little green.

That is especially true at the moment, since everyone from Chanel to Celine sent them down the runway and the front rows were littered with fashion editors in spotless white trews.

BUT NOW WE CAN ALL GET AWAY WITH WHITE

It all looked so effortless. And insanely chic. And impossible. Until now. There’s no commute on grubby Tube trains and no one jostling our morning lattes. Now is the moment to step out (even if only for once a day) in white jeans.

AVOID ANYTHING SKINNY

The wide-legged pair I’m wearing here are from M&S and a personal favourite. Topshop flares are a great cut, or for a more relaxed look, go for the Whistles barrel leg style (both below). I would avoid anything skinny. And make sure you go for a thick denim — something that conceals your underwear, cellulite and varicose veins.

THIS IS HOW YOU WEAR IT

If you’re one of those blessed people I mention above, wear yours with a white T-shirt or neutrals. For the rest of us, they look great with dusty tones and pastels, too. I’m modelling mine with a wipe clean, leather-look shirt to give myself half a chance. They really do work with anything — apart from pasta dishes, red wine and children.
