Google has launched 10 new augmented reality dinosaur filters for Android and iOS users to enjoy — including Tyrannosaurs rex, Stegosaurus and Velociraptor.
The feature allows you to turn your garden or living room into your very own ‘Jurassic World’ — and even play out your favourite scenes from the long-running franchise.
The AR dinosaurs — accessible via Google search — are based on the designs featured in ‘Jurassic World Alive’, a game by Montreal-based developer Ludia.

‘Watch the massive T. rex stomp in your living room — or gaze up at a majestic Brachiosaurus as it towers above a neighbourhood tree,’ wrote Google AR Experiences’ group product manager Archana Kannan.
‘Search for a dinosaur on Google using a mobile device and tap “View in 3D” to rotate or zoom in and see it up close.’
‘You can then bring the dinosaur into your space with AR and adjust its size to understand how big it is in relation to the things around you.’
In addition, Android users can turn up their device’s volume to hear each dinosaur’s roar and thudding footsteps, Ms Kannan added.
‘To create the 3D dinosaurs, our concept artists first did preliminary research to discover information about each creature,’ said Ludia lead artist Camilo Sanin.
‘Not only did we draw research from various forms of literature, our artists also worked with palaeontologists and the “Jurassic World” team to make the assets as accurate and realistic as possible. ‘
‘Even the smallest of details, such as irregularities of skin colour and patterns, are important.’

The new augmented reality feature will include Jurassic World’s Tyrannosaurus rex, Velociraptor, Triceratops, Spinosaurus, Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Pteranodon and Parasaurolophus.
According to Google, the dinosaurs posed a new technical challenge when compared to the firm’s existing AR animals, given their massive size.
‘The new auto-scale feature on Android can now automatically calculate the distance between your phone and a surface in your space and resize the dinosaur so it fits on your phone screen,’ they added.
‘If you tap “View actual size,” AR tracking technology automatically re-positions the dinosaur in your space to make room for it.’
The project is a collaboration between Google, Universal Brand Development, film production company Amblin Entertainment and video game firm Ludia.
