Piers Morgan downs a pint at 6:40AM and jokes teetotal Susanna Reid is ‘dull’

Piers Morgan kicked off Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain with a bang as he treated himself to beer at 6.40am.

The lead news anchor, 55, couldn’t contain his delight as he learned a local brewery from his hometown Lewes, Sussex Best, named an alcoholic beverage after him.

Later into the programme, the presenter joked that he now finds co-host Susanna Reid ‘dull’ since she became teetotal almost two years ago, with Judge Rinder admitting he once tried to persuade her to start drinking again.

Piers grinned from ear-to-ear as he was presented with a free pint by the crew, with his sidekick Susanna, 49, quipping: ‘How appropriate – a massive head [of the drink]!’

The media personality boasted: ‘Look at that. I’ve got to say it’s a beautiful brewery. It’s a fantastic drop.’

He updated his Instagram followers by sharing snaps of himself downing the drink, which he captioned: ‘BOOM! First pint of Harvey’s in 4 months! Who cares it’s only 6.42am… and I’ve got 2 more hours of live TV.’

The TV star briefly referred to viewers who disapproved his antics as he said: ‘Now some of the k**** from Twitter have gone over to Instagram. You’re going to get blocked, bye Rick! I need a new follower now.’

Elsewhere in the show, former BBC host Susanna reminisced about her past holiday with Judge Rinder, 42, in Ibiza, as they discussed his recent Celebrity Gogglebox stint.

A cheeky Piers brought up the brunette’s 22 months of sobriety, insisting he ‘misses’ the ‘old Susanna’.

He asked the criminal barrister: ‘Is it not boring that she doesn’t drink? I find her very dull since she’s stopped.’

Confessing that he attempted to convince Susanna to go off the wagon during their trip, The Rob Rinder Verdict star said: ‘I can’t lie, I did try and persuade her to start drinking again.’

‘I miss the old Susanna’, Piers added, before the television personality added: ‘She wasn’t exactly Guns’n’Roses, was she?’

The broadcaster later recalled when he and his ‘work wife’ ended up in a gay bar in Soho at 4am, reflecting: ‘It turned out I was a lot more popular with the community than I realised.’

Piers has been recovering from heat exhaustion after he was left bedridden for two days during the UK’s heatwave last week.

During Monday’s episode, the journalist told viewers he couldn’t ‘walk, breathe or speak’ as he suffered from heat exhaustion after playing golf in the sun on Friday.

The former Britain’s Got Talent judge, who admitted he hasn’t ‘completely recovered’, reassured fans who were concerned about his ‘bloated face and pinhead eyes’ as he joked: ‘I do love the viewers. They don’t hold back!’

Detailing his ‘unpleasant’ weekend, the ITV star said: ‘I woke up on Saturday morning and suddenly went wooo, wooo.

‘I hadn’t had a single thing to drink – I had heat exhaustion. I spent two days in bed. I basically couldn’t walk, couldn’t breathe. I could barely talk.’

‘Heat exhaustion is actually quite unpleasant, I’ve discovered. I was very tired. I just slept it off.’

The TV veteran ensured he powered through the show as he said: ‘I probably haven’t completely recovered but you dig deep and you battle on.’

In typical Piers fashion, he laughed off his condition as he added: ‘It was a utopia for my critics really!’

What is heat exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is not usually serious if you can cool down within 30 minutes. If it turns into heatstroke, it needs to be treated as an emergency.

If someone has heat exhaustion, they should be moved to a cool place, laid down with their feet slightly raised, hydrated with water and cooled down with a cold pack.

The signs of heat exhaustion include:

  • a headache
  • dizziness and confusion
  • loss of appetite and feeling sick
  • excessive sweating and pale, clammy skin
  • cramps in the arms, legs and stomach
  • fast breathing or pulse
  • temperature of 38C or above
  • being very thirsty

At one point, the Life Stories presenter alarmed the show’s resident medic Dr Hilary Jones when he confused diuretics – a medication to increase the amount of water and salt expelled from the body – for Dioraltye – a rehydration remedy‎.

Piers clarified: ‘I wasn’t on diuretics. Happy to be this chunky. I actually loved it, but I then got heat exhaustion.’

Later into the programme, he addressed viewers who took to Twitter with concerns about his appearance, with some comments more blunt than others.

Piers chuckled: ‘I’m getting a few concerned thoughts on Twitter. Am I OK? I’m looking ill.

‘Keith writes: ”You all right mate? Face bloated, pinhead eyes, faltering voice. Get well soon.”

‘I do love the viewers. They don’t hold back. I spent all weekend in bed with heat exhaustion after playing golf on Friday.’

His amused co-star Susanna sarcastically asked: ‘You’re showing so much courage. How are you doing?’, before he replied: ‘Not great – but I’m helped enormously by the touching concern of the viewers.’
