Big Brother is a ratings success as the viewing figures for the finale arrive

Big Brother is a ratings success as the viewing figures for the last episode are FINALLY revealed after data company Nielsen was hit by a cyber attack

A cyber attack on the Nielsen Data Centre delayed the delivery of TV ratings for last week’s live finale of Big Brother Australia.

But the viewing figures arrived today, and Channel Seven can breathe a sigh of relief because the broadcast was a modest success.

Taking into account the finale ratings, Big Brother is Seven’s biggest entertainment show of 2020 so far, and its most successful reality show in two years.

As reported by TV Blackbox, the live finale on Wednesday, July 22 averaged 1.13 million viewers nationally (876,000 metro).

Tuesday’s semi-final was watched by 1.19 million people nationally (832,000 metro).

Big Brother went up against Channel 10’s Bachelor in Paradise on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, but the dating show had less than 500,000 metro viewers on each night.

Seven’s Programming Director Angus Ross said: ‘We were confident that Big Brother would deliver massive audiences in the key demos, particularly 25-54s, and the ratings released today confirm it.’

‘Big Brother has shifted our audience, being instrumental to us winning all key demos the last seven weeks in a row. It’s also been the foundation of 7plus breaking records, now winning 15 weeks in a row as the top CFTA BVOD service. We’re just getting started and we’ve got plenty more wins to come,’ he added.

BVOD stands for broadcaster video on demand, which encompasses Seven’s digital streaming service, 7plus.

The data shows that 7plus saw almost 290 million minutes streamed for Big Brother, making it the top program on BVOD across its entire run.

Meanwhile, the broadcast data recognised Big Brother as one of 2020’s most-watched shows across commercial television so far this year.

It beat Australian Survivor, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Bachelor in Paradise and Dancing with the Stars in terms of total viewership.
