‘It’s one of the hardest journeys’: Sia reflects on motherhood after adopting two sons last year… and says she’s ‘planning to foster actual infants’

Sia announced in May that she had adopted two sons last year, because they were ‘ageing out of the foster care system’ and had lived ‘extremely traumatic lives’.

The Australian singer told Vogue Australia for their October cover story, that while she has ‘such an overflow of ‘love’, motherhood is ‘one of the hardest’ journeys.

Sia, 44, who is now based in the United States, also revealed whether she plans on becoming a foster parent in the future.

Reflecting on her motherhood journey, the Adelaide-born star told Vogue: ‘It’s one of the hardest, but I have obviously such an overflow of love that I could definitely see myself doing it again, but not for a while.’

Sia, whose real name is Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, went on to reveal that she’s already considering becoming a foster parent.

‘The next thing I’m planning to do is foster actual infants. Maybe [their mother] is drug-addicted and then I could help look after them until, you know, their mum can get back on the wagon or an adoptive home is found,’ she said.

However, during a chat with DJ Zane Lowe on his Apple Music podcast in July, Sia explained that her adopted sons, who are black, had made her more aware of racial prejudice in the United States.

‘I’m embarrassed that it took me to adopt two black sons to really understand what they go through on a daily basis,’ she said.

She admitted she was ‘very scared’ for her children, and had to show tough love to the teenagers when they weren’t being transparent with her.

‘I’d say, “I’m doing this because I’m your mother. I love you”,’ she explained.

Sia also recalled one emotional conversation she had with her children, in which she told them: ‘I don’t want to see you in prison.

‘With your history and the colour of your skin, I don’t want to see you as that five percent that ends up in prison for life. I don’t want that for you.’
