Hunt for heartless hit-and-driver who left baby with fractured skull: Motorist smashed into pram as mother crossed road then sped off leaving seven-week-old girl fighting for life

  • River’s pram was toppled over as the family crossed the road by Asda, Wrexham
  • Baby has spent two nights in hospital receiving treatment for her injuries
  • Police have appealed for the driver of a white hatchback to come forward

Police are frantically searching for a hit-and-run driver that left a seven-week-old baby with a fractured skull and bleed on the brain.

The little girl’s pram toppled over when the white hatchback ploughed into it as mother Amie Maitland, 30, crossed the road next to Asda in Wrexham, North Wales.

River has spent two nights in Wrexham General Hospital for treatment for her devastating injuries.

Distraught Amie, who also had three-year-old son Hendricks with her, said the driver jumped a red-light before hitting the family at 10.30am on Wednesday.

She ran one-and-a-half miles home with the children because she didn’t want to wait for an ambulance. No one stopped to help.

Detective Inspector Eleri Thomas said North Wales Police are appealing for the driver to come forward.

‘I would also ask for any witness in the area at the time, anyone with dash-cam footage which may assist us, and any taxis which may have been in the area at the time and who may have witnessed a distressed female with a pram and a young child to contact us.’

Mother Amie Maitland, 30, was pushing River in her pram as they crossed the road in Wrexham, North Wales, when the pram was hit by a car. Mother Amie is pictured with father Josh Russell

Heartbroken father Josh Russell, 29, said the person responsible ‘ought to hand themselves in to the police’.

He told The Sun Online: ‘Only the day before Amie sent me a wonderful smiling picture of River, she’s such a lovely happy baby and very rarely cries.

‘Now she’s in a hospital cot badly injured, but even then the other day she managed to smile for me, so we are hopeful that all will be well.’

Speaking about the hit-and-run, he added: ‘Hendricks was a bit upset and traumatised on the day and Amie has been playing everything back in her head.

‘Every time she closes her eyes she relives it – the bang of the crash and everything with the car driving away.

‘It could have been so much worse, if they had hit Amie and Hendricks as well as the pram.’

The family has released a heartbreaking picture of the baby lying in a hospital cot surrounded by cuddly toys.

Amie wrote on Facebook: ‘I was crossing at the traffic lights opposite the old police station – A white Hyundai or Toyota (small box car on wheels similar to Peugeot 107) over-ran a red light heading towards Tesco and hit my pram out of my hands overturning in the road.

‘My newborn seven-week-old baby was inside. Driver drove off and not one person failed to stop despite my best efforts.

‘Police are looking for CCTV I want this person to be caught. Baby currently in hospital undergoing observations – waiting on a scan!’

River was a surprise blessing for the family, after she was born in the living room when Amie didn’t even realise she was pregnant.
