Coronation Street kicks off 60th anniversary countdown with tributes from stars including Joanna Lumley as the soap gears up for special episodes

Coronation Street has unveiled huge plans for its 60th anniversary which will see a plethora of star-studded tributes including one from Joanna Lumley.

The countdown for the huge milestone has begun, with 60 days to go until December 9th, and to celebrate, the ITV soap will mark each day with a very special message from celebrity fans. 

Meanwhile, as well as a plethora of special anniversary shows, the soap will also see three explosive storylines reach their dramatic conclusion, including the outcome of Yasmeen Nazir’s trial.

Coronation Street was first launched by series creator Tony Warren on December 9th 1960.

Since then, fans have gone on to see a whopping 10,000 episodes play out on the  famous cobbles which has seen 57 births, 146 deaths and 131 weddings.

The Guinness World Record breaking soap has also seen its fair share of affairs, murders, secrets and lies in the fictional town of Weatherfield. 

Viewing figures still top 7 million per episode on average, while Coronation Street has been sold to 135 countries worldwide.

To mark its momentous anniversary, between now and December 9th, the TV favourite will screen special shows, publish an anniversary book, launch new products and reveal unique social media content – all the while delivering non-stop drama from the street. 

The thrilling anniversary week will finally see the conclusion of three storylines, while also kicking off a chain of new events which will take the ITV soap into 2021 and beyond. 

Viewers will no doubt look forward to the conclusion of the Yasmeen Nazir and Geoff Metcalfe plot, which has rumbled on for months.

The downtrodden character is facing trial for attacking Geoff in self-defence after months of mental abuse in which he shattered her self-esteem and isolated her from her loved ones. 

Will justice be served for Yasmeen? Or will Geoff get away with his evil ways?

Meanwhile, two characters will struggle to keep a shameful secret as their lies and deceit threatens to destroy their lives and those around them.

Elsewhere, Coronation Street itself is threatened as villain Ray Crosby threatens to bring the bulldozers in after buying most of the businesses and residences there.

As the character makes plans for his new development, the race is on to save the iconic cobbles.
