Meghan Markle pays tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg as she speaks out about mental health

Meghan Markle paid tribute to late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg by wearing a statement t-shirt and face mask honouring the feminist icon during a podcast recording this week.

The Duke, 36, and Duchess of Sussex, 39, appeared on the Teenager Therapy podcast yesterday in which they discussed the stigma surrounding mental health  and ‘how we can all contribute to a healthier world: physically, mentally, emotionally and holistically’.

Meghan opted for a low-key look for the occasion, pairing a £16 grey t-shirt emblazoned with Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s initials, with a mask bearing a quote by the feminist icon reading: ‘When there are nine.’

Last month, the Duchess called Ginsburg ‘a Justice of courage’ in a statement released shortly after her death.

Appearing on the podcast, the Duchess opted for a relaxed outfit, donning a simple grey t-shirt with RBG written in large blue letters across the front.

She paired the statement tee with a black face mask featuring the words ‘When there are nine’ in white letters.

The phrase is taken from what is often considered one of Ginsburg’s most famous quotes, in which she said: ‘I’m sometimes asked when will there be enough [women on the Supreme Court] And I say when there are nine, people are shocked. But there’d been nine men, and nobody’s ever raised a question about that.’

The outfit choice comes weeks after Ginsburg, 87, died last month after a battle with pancreatic cancer, giving President Donald Trump a chance to expand the U.S. top court’s conservative majority at a time of deep divisions in America, as a presidential election looms.

Ginsburg, the second female justice ever appointed to the Supreme Court, is widely regarded as a feminist icon.

Prior to her appointment to the high court, Ginsburg argued six gender equality cases before the court.

Last month, Meghan paid tribute to the feminist icon in a statement released to the media shortly after her death.

The Duchess said: ‘With an incomparable and indelible legacy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will forever be known as a woman of brilliance, a Justice of courage, and a human of deep conviction.

‘She has been a true inspiration to me since I was a girl. Honor her, remember her, act for her,’ she continued.

Meghan, who is currently living in Los Angeles with Prince Harry and their son Archie, after the couple stepped down as senior royals in March and moved to North America, has become increasingly politically outspoken in the last few months.

It comes after a celebrity agent claimed Meghan could go into politics and has every right to run for US President.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph last month, Jonathan Shalit said he has ‘never heard’ the Duchess discuss politics, but added it wasn’t ‘beyond the realm of possibility’.

‘She’s American-born, she has every right to run for president. Ronald Reagan was a B-list actor who ended up in the White House. Never say never,’ he said.

‘The perception of the couple in America is different to the UK. The UK has a love-hate relationship with the Sussexes, but it’s different in the States.

He continued: ‘I think Meghan is very ambitious, but in this country that is sometimes considered an unpleasant character trait. Yet she’s achieved a great deal already.’

The Duchess honoured the late justice as she appeared on the most recent episode of Teenager Therapy with Prince Harry.

The episode went yesterday and saw the couple talk to hosts Gael, Kayla and Thomas about their own experience of mental health.

Meghan said that the impact of the pandemic had pushed people increasingly toward the internet which she claimed opened up a ‘vulnerability’ and a place for ‘disconnection’.
