The film was previously adapted by auteur Nicolas Roeg in 1990 in a version starring Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch.

Despite receiving positive reviews, the film was a failure at the box office, though it developed a reputation as a cult classic in recent years.

The new adaptation of The Witches, helmed by Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis, was originally set for an early October release in theaters, but it was moved back to October 16 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

More recently, the movie was taken out of theaters completely and will now be streaming exclusively for HBO Max subscribers in the US, though fans outside of the US will still be able to see it in theaters on October 22.
