Robert Pattinson will be making his debut as the Caped Crusader when The Batman hits the big screen in 2022.

And a stunt double wearing the Batman mask could be seen looking out over the city of Liverpool as he filmed scenes for the upcoming blockbuster on top of The Royal Liver Building on Thursday.

The performer was strapped into a harness which was attached to a crane above him as he leaned over the building and looked out onto the city below.

Before donning the Batman outfit, the double was dressed in a dark padded suit with matching gloves and a vest while his eyes were painted black.

The actor leaned over the building while lots of film equipment could be seen behind him and a helicopter with a film crew flew by.

The double appeared to be alone on the platform after the production recently resumed filming following a set shutdown last month when leading star Robert, 34, tested positive for COVID-19.

The Royal Liver Building is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Liverpool and, along with the Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building, is one of the city’s Three Graces which line the waterfront.

Liverpool is currently in a Tier 3 lockdown with restrictions including a ban on socialising with other households indoors and in private gardens while pubs and bars are also required to close.

It was revealed last Wednesday that filming had started on the highly anticipated film, after the cinema release date was delayed until 2022 due to fears over the novel coronavirus pandemic.

An insider previously told MailOnline: ‘Today is the first day the main production unit has returned to filming and there seem to be no other hiccups at the moment.’

Meanwhile, a Warner Bros. Pictures spokesperson confirmed: ‘Following a hiatus for COVID 19 quarantine precautions, filming has now resumed on The Batman in the U.K.’

Warner Bros. vans were spotted in the city centre as workmen hauled props into St George’s Hall.

Filming for the £100million movie is expected to last around a week with roughly 100 actors and crew sticking to strict quarantining rules.

However, many are questioning whether filming will continue after the Prime Minister announced the city was being placed into a Tier Three lockdown, with a host of new restrictions coming into force.

However, there is no mention of the film industry being affected in the latest guidelines, while guidance provided by the British Film Commission has also not been updated since September 29.

Liverpool will play an important role in The Batman as American filmmaker Matt Reeves, who is directing the upcoming superhero film, revealed recently at DC FanDome, a virtual convention held by DC Comics and Warner Bros.

During an interview, he confirmed Liverpool would be the backbone for Gotham City as they shoot the remaining 75 per cent of the film.

However, Manchester and Lancashire could be put under Tier 3 lockdown after the Government’s ‘Gold command’ taskforce scientists signed off on the harsh measures.
