Survey reveals one in three Brits only wash their bedsheets once a YEAR

There’s nothing like the feeling of fresh sheets, but an alarming number of adults appear comfortable with sleeping in a grubby bed at night, according to new research.  

In a survey of 2,000 people by Hammonds Furniture, 30 per cent of those asked confessed they wash their bedding once a year or less, while a further 38 per cent said they washed their coats the same amount.   

Doctor Aragona Giuseppe, GP and Medical Advisor at Prescription Doctor, warned Hull Live that not washing bedsheets regularly could lead to risk of infection, acne, and smelliness.

He told: ‘If you do not wash clothing items often you could be at risk of infection or just feeling and smelling unclean.

‘Bedsheets and pillowcases should be washed because if they are dirty this could promote acne, spots and other skin issues due to the dirty bacteria on the sheets transferring to your skin.’ 

Over a quarter of those asked admitted they only washed their cushions and blankets once a year, while a further 18 per cent washed their jeans just as infrequently. 

When it comes to washing underwear, the majority of women said they washed their undergarments after every wear, while a quarter of men admitted to washing their underwear after every five washes.

One in five were found to wash their socks after ten wears or more, while 15 per cent claimed to wash their gym kit just once a year.  

Meanwhile the cleanest city goes to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, with over half of residents washing t-shirts after just one use and one in six washing all over their clothing after one use.  

When it comes to age, millennials are the cleanest with 17 per cent washing clothing after one wear, while 65+ year-olds have the lowest percentage of those who wash after one use with 13 per cent.
