Wonder Woman 1984 may not get Christmas theatrical release

The highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 is still slated for release December 25 after being pushed back several times.

But whether it will actually happen is anyone’s guess as the coronavirus pandemic rages on with movie theaters across the globe still shut down.

‘I don’t think anybody can be confident of anything right now,’ director Patty Jenkins told Variety.

‘We just don’t know what the course of COVID is going to be like,’ she continued, and added that she’s ‘very hopeful’ her film can still open in December.

‘It feels totally possible to me,’ she said.

It has been Jenkins’ intention from the start that WW 1984 would be viewed in a theatrical setting and rather than streamed at home.

The California born director described how weird it’s been for her to have so much downtime this year after the craziness of filming.

‘It’s unbelievably surreal. The biggest surreality about it is it’s supposed to be one adventure, right? You sign on to the movie, you write the movie, you direct the movie, you make the movie, the movie comes out, and you move on.

‘Instead, like, I spent three years doing one thing, seven days a week, and then I just popped out of it to just nothing. No evidence of that [work]. I mean, that’s not true. I still work on, you know, Doritos bags bags and stuff like that all the time,’ she said.

Pedro Pascal, who plays villain Max Lord in the Gal Gadot-led film, told Variety, ‘As far as movie releases are concerned and the tremendous way that the industry is having to improvise around these circumstances, nothing is surprising.

‘We’re all getting used to things shifting day-to-day, hour-to-hour, you know? That’s what we’re all dealing with,’

Last month it was announced that the sequel to the hugely successful 2017 film was moving from an October premiere to Christmas instead.

It was the fifth release date change which was initially slated to hit theaters in December 13 2019 and then was pushed to November 1.

When the Joker was announced for release in October, Wonder Woman 1984 was moved to June 5 2020.

After the pandemic hit in March and movie theaters shut down, the release was changed to August 14, then October 2 and then to December 25 where it currently stands.

Jenkins said last month that she was still hoping to be able to bring the movie to the big screen.

‘First and foremost let me say how much Gal [Gadot] and I love all our devoted Wonder Woman fans around the world, and your excitement for WW84 couldn’t make us happier or more eager for you to see the movie,’ Jenkins said in a statement to Deadline.

‘Because I know how important it is to bring this movie to you on a big screen when all of us can share the experience together, I’m hopeful you won’t mind waiting just a little bit longer.’

The original film, that was also directed by Jenkins, turned into a blockbuster hit, grossing $821.8 million at the worldwide box office.

Along with Gadot in the titular role, the sequel also stars Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Kristen Wiig, and Connie Nielsen.
