Sheepdog sells for world record-breaking £20,000

The £20,000 sheepdog: World record price in bidding war for working collie as new owner buys her after watching video

  • Brown and white collie Henna, three, was bought by hill farmer Donna Jones
  • Her new dog will control 750 sheep in Llanbedr, in Black Mountains, South Wales
  • Despite the sum, Mrs Jones, 41, is confident Henna will be worth every penny

As someone who has worked with sheepdogs since childhood, Donna Jones knows a good herder when she sees one.

So when she spotted an impressive young dog from one of Britain’s top breeders being put through her paces in an online auction video, the hill farmer was determined to buy her.

Others had also seen three-year-old Henna’s potential, though – and a bidding war saw the price for the brown and white collie soar to a world record-breaking £20,000.

Despite the higher than expected sum, Mrs Jones, 41, is confident the new addition to her farm will be worth every penny.

She had been saving for some time for a new, trained sheepdog to control the 750 sheep at the farm in Llanbedr, in South Wales’s Black Mountains.

The mother of three – who runs the farm with husband Gareth, 44 – said that when she saw Henna was the same three colours as her old dog Tikka, she ‘just had to have her’.

She added: ‘I’m delighted and I’m sure Henna is going to have a wonderful time working here with my family.’

Henna came from renowned breeder Kevin Evans, whose father David held the previous world record for the most expensive working collie, £19,451 for Elan Valley Sally in June.

Fully-trained working collies usually cost from £3,000. The sale was run by Skipton Auction Mart, North Yorkshire.
