The Veronicas’ Jessica and Lisa Origliasso have spoken about caring for their mother Colleen during her battle with a rare neurological condition called progressive supranuclear palsy.

In an emotional video for Carers Australia, the 35-year-old identical twin sisters said looking after their mum has been ‘challenging but rewarding’.

‘Caring for mama is the most challenging thing we’ve ever had to do, but it’s definitely the most rewarding,’ Lisa said.

She added: ‘We’re very lucky that we have each other. On days where emotionally it’s indescribably hard, we can really count on each other to understand.’

Jess went on to say she didn’t initially recognise herself as a career because she was ‘looking after someone she loves’.

‘It was almost confusing at the start as to why our emotional and mental health needed a lot of extra support,’ she said.

Jess added:’I don’t think we realised at the start why things were starting to get really heavy, because we would do what we’ve been doing any day for her or someone that we love.’

The sisters, who are ambassadors for National Carers Week 2020, also thanked other carers for their ‘compassion and empathy’.

Footage of Jessica and Lisa caring for Colleen was also shared online ahead of Carers Week, which annually celebrates carers and aims to raise awareness of the important work they do.

Progressive supranuclear palsy is a rare, degenerative brain disorder that impedes walking, balance and eye movements, as well as causing dementia.

The Veronicas’ emotional interview comes as they join the cast for the next season of The Celebrity Apprentice Australia, which will air in 2021.
