Kate Garraway admits Halloween has been ‘tough’ as husband Derek ‘loves’ the spooky occasion

Kate Garraway has candidly admitted that celebrating Halloween has been ‘tough’ as her husband Derek Draper ‘loves’ the occasion.

The Good Morning Britain host, 53, took to Instagram to mark the event, saying that although it has been difficult, she and their children have tried to ‘celebrate’ him.

Father-of-two Derek, 53, was admitted to hospital with COVID-19 symptoms on March 30 and remains seriously ill.

Sharing a glimpse of her Halloween celebrations on social media, Kate shared a video of her home all kitted out with decorations.

In a short clip a range of items could be seen, including a spooky light-up pumpkin and creepy hologram in a mirror.

The TV presenter was also briefly spotted on camera as she filmed around the room and appeared in a mirror, appearing to be wearing a black and orange top.

Captioning her post, Kate wrote: ‘Tough day as Derek loves #halloween – but the kids have encouraged me to get some of his favourite spooky kit out to celebrate him and feel better for it . Happy #halloween everyone’.

It comes after Kate told how her husband Derek doesn’t need a ventilator to breathe anymore in hospital as he continues to recover from coronavirus.

The TV presenter also revealed how Derek has spoken his first word, which was ‘pain’, since being put in an induced coma.

She said that medics have now removed the tracheotomy tube, which was previously aiding Derek’s breathing.

Kate told The Sun: ‘[A] significant change is that they’ve been able to remove his tracheotomy tube – which is very positive as it means his lungs have started to work and aren’t solid as they were before. But he still has a long way to go.’

Kate added: ‘Had this happened back in May, I’d have been jubilant, but now I know how slow the change is, and how quickly things can slip backwards. I’m trying to keep my hope in check.

‘Derek still needs help with his breathing, especially at night, and is very weak.’

Derek was originally admitted to hospital with COVID-19 symptoms on March 30 and remains seriously ill.

Kate explained that the hospital staff have been constantly trying to engage Derek and get a response from him, but for the first time recently he was able to convey how he was feeling to them.

She described it as a breakthrough due to the fact that Derek ‘has been able to connect the feeling in his body to his brain and mouth’, after he said the word ‘pain’ twice.

The developments come after it was reported that Kate is set to front an emotional documentary about husband Derek’s battle with coronavirus.

Kate is said to be determined to ensure people are aware how serious the virus is, after her family ‘had their lives turned upside down.’

Her husband – who has become the longest surviving patient in the UK, after seven  months in hospital – was taken into hospital with COVID-19 symptoms and remains in intensive care after being in a coma for several months.

Kate will reportedly look at other families who have been impacted by the pandemic as she investigates the effects of the virus on the UK.

It’s claimed that the documentary will be produced by Flicker Productions, who were behind All Women – a recent documentary hosted by Kathy Burke.

Earlier this month, Kate told GMB viewers of her husband’s condition, saying: ‘There are big ups and big downs, not big ups really, small improvements and worrying downs as well.

‘But the last few days have been pretty stable, so keeping everything crossed really.’

Kate added that due to hospital restrictions she’s the only person in her family that’s been able to visit Derek.

‘It’s tough, it’s very hard. You completely understand why hospitals have to do it, they have to protect those inside who may be recovering from COVID or maybe dealing with other serious conditions,’ she explained.

‘But to do that, they have to decrease footfall, so Darcy hasn’t been able to see Derek, his mum and dad haven’t been able to see him for a long time now.

‘The fact they live in Lancashire and that might go into tier two will have an effect because it will be very tough for them to argue the case to be able to visit. It is difficult.’
