‘Did he confuse the set with the one from Cinderella?’ The Crown viewers are shocked to spot a MOUSE running across the set during new series

The Crown series four landed on Netflix on Sunday, introducing the likes of Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher to viewers.

And amid the new additions to the cast was a surprising cameo as fans spotted a rodent scurrying across the floor of Windsor Castle.

The creature made his appearance minutes into episode three of the new series, stealing the scene from lead Olivia Colman as the Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret and Marion Bailey as The Queen Mother.

Mouse! The Crown series four landed on Netflix on Sunday, and amid the new additions to the cast was a surprising cameo as fans spotted a rodent running around Windsor Castle

As the trio prepared to debrief after a visit to the castle by Princess Diana, played by newcomer Emma Corrin, the rodent scampered across the carpet mere feet from the Queen Mother.

Viewers were shocked by the cameo, taking to Twitter to ask if it was an intentional move from series director Peter Morgan.

‘The rat in the opening scene is SYMBOLISM’ tweeted one fan, with another joking that the furry creature represented one of the more controversial members of the royal family:

‘A RAT just ran across the floor in the crown. they really nailed the prince andrew casting this season, amazing.’

Another fan quipped that the rodent had got lost and belonged in another palace. ‘The mouse might have confused the set of The Crown with the one from Cinderella.’

And one viewer compared the surprising appearance to the gaffe made by another hit show, Game of Thrones, which accidentally left a take out coffee cup in the edit.

‘Starbucks coffee in game of thrones: who are you rat in the crown: im you but stronger.’

‘Am I supposed to assume the royal family is infested by rodents? LMAO. Was it an accident? Did they have a mouse for filming. I MUST KNOW,’ pleaded another.

One fan got a response from The Crown’s official Twitter account after they asked: ‘Anyone else catch the mouse casually strolling past the Queen Mother in Episode 3?#TheCrown’.

The Crown account quipped in reply: ‘Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series?’.

As well as the mouse, the newly released series four of The Crown focuses on dark times for the royals as they face yet more political and social upheaval.

Emma Corrin joins the cast as Princess Diana, as the series moves through the 1980s and Prince Charles’ (played by Josh O’Connor) courtship and marriage to the Princess of Wales.

The British nation is struggling with the impact of the divisive policies introduced by Britain’s first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, played by Gillian Anderson.

Tensions between the Prime Minister and the Queen are expected to only get worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth.

A silver lining comes in the form of Charles’ fairytale romance with young Lady Diana, but behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.

Series five meanwhile will depict the Royal Family in the early 90s, which the Netflix show set to end is sixth series in 2003.
