The upcoming series is based on the New York Magazine article How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People, written by Jessica Pressler.

The article details the true story of Anna Delvey, born Anna Sorokina, a fraudster who pretended to be a wealthy German heiress and managed to blend into the New York social scene.

The native-born Russian was born to humble beginnings before moving to Germany and subsequently moving to New York in 2013, where she portrayed herself as the daughter of a diplomat or oil executive.

The fraudster would stay in upscale hotels and eat at James Beard Award-winning restaurants while convincing others to foot the bill, claiming forgetfulness or difficulty in transferring funds.

Sorokina managed to keep up her persona for five years before being arrested and charged for multiple offenses, including grand larceny; she was sentenced to four to eight years behind bars and ordered to pay just under $200,000 in restitution.

Netflix first acquired the rights to the material in 2018, and is actively producing the miniseries along with Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and her production company Shondaland.
