Man, 49, is arrested on suspicion of murder after school teacher, 47, was killed in attack that also left a 15-year-old boy seriously injured

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a school teacher was killed following an attack which also left a teenage boy seriously injured.

Caroline Kayll, 47, was assaulted alongside a 15-year-old boy in the village of Linton, Northumberland at around 8.55pm on Sunday.

Ms Kayll, who worked as a teacher at Atkinson House school, later died in hospital while the teenager suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Northumbria Police tonight confirmed a 49-year-old man was arrested near Glasgow on suspicion of murder following the attack.

Superintendent Paul Milner said: ‘In recent days our officers have been carrying out enquiries across the region and north of the border.

‘Those enquiries have now led to the arrest of a man on suspicion of Caroline’s murder and the serious assault of a teenage boy.

‘We want to reassure the public that this was an isolated incident and at no point were they at risk.’ 

Ms Kayll had worked for a school which caters for children with social, emotional and mental health issues.

In a statement, the school in Seghill, Cramlington, said: ‘Our school community is saddened to hear the news of Caroline’s passing.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this very difficult time.’ 

A 58-year-old man, arrested earlier this week on suspicion of assisting an offender, has since been released under investigation, police added.
