Camila Alves gushes over her relationship with husband Matthew McConaughey’s mother Kay

Getting along with your in-laws isn’t always easy but Camila Alves has hit her stride with Matthew McConaughey’s mom.

Camila, 38, and her mother-in-law, Mary Kathlene ‘Kay’ McCabe, joined The Drew Barrymore Show together for a virtual chat about the model’s website, Women of Today, on Tuesday.

Their appearance comes a week after Matthew and his mom sat down for their first joint interview following the release of his memoir which detailed their near decade-long estrangement.

Ladies! Camila Alves, 38, and her mother-in-law, Mary Kathlene ‘Kay’ McCabe, joined The Drew Barrymore Show together for a virtual chat about the model’s website, Women of Today, on Tuesday

Kay, 88, began the discussion by gushing to Drew about the first time they saw each other – on the set of the 1995 film Boys on the Side.

Drew starred opposite Whoopi Goldberg and Mary-Louise Parker in the friendship comedy-drama which featured McConaughey playing police officer Abe Lincoln.

While the Oscar-winner didn’t make an appearance alongside his wife and mom, the pair did open up about their relationship and how Kay was ‘testing’ at the start.

‘I love the fact that also you and Kay now are on this journey and we get to go on that journey because let’s face it there are movies made about in-law relationships,’ Drew quipped to the pair.

‘Yes, you are absolutely right and some of them are not very, very, very productive but we get along really well together,’ Kay responded.

Camila added: ‘It took some work.’

‘I was a lot of testing at first but, you know, Drew, throughout this time she’s been staying with us, we’ve been keeping everybody safe during this time and I was doing all of this Women of Today stuff and I was like, ‘You know Ma Mac, you’re here, you have so much knowledge, do you want to be part of it?’ And you jumped right in and it’s a way that we get to really connect and have fun together at this time,’ she said.

Last month while promoting his bombshell biography on The Howard Stern Show, he also reflected on the time Kay gave a televised tour of his childhood home.

When Stern asked if he stopped talking to his mother after she showed off the bed where ‘he lost his virginity,’ he explained those years were ‘tough.’

It was tough for eight years, but we went through it and we’re on the other side of it. It’s good,’ he concluded, noting things between them are no longer ‘strenuous.’

In his memoir, Matthew reveals he was an unplanned baby, with his mother believing he was a stomach tumor until the fifth month of her pregnancy, and that his father went to the bar on the day he was born because he believed the baby wasn’t his.

Camila and Kay’s chat with Drew will be featured in the next episode of The Drew Barrymore Show which airs weekdays.
