The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson weighs in after Sunrise and Today show stars crash each other’s live broadcasts while reporting on Queensland’s border reopening

On Tuesday, reporters for Channel Seven’s Sunrise and the Nine Network’s Today show crashed each other’s live broadcasts.

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac and Today presenter Aislin Kriukelis were both broadcasting live from Brisbane Airport, interviewing domestic travellers arriving in Queensland for the first time since the state’s borders were reopened.

On Tuesday night, The Project’s Lisa Wilkinson, who is a former Today show star, weighed in on the faux pas.

Lisa was asked by her co-hosts if Sam ever tried to grab her mic, which she laughed off.

She then added, eyebrows raised: ‘I dont know how the network bosses will feel about that, but good on Sam Mac!’

The breakfast TV ratings war between Channel Seven’s Sunrise and the Nine Network’s Today show has been raging for years.

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood comedy on Tuesday, it all kicked off, as Sam began playfully swooping into Aislin’s shots and ambushing her interviews with travellers.

At one stage, the 38-year-old even attempted to hijack the blonde’s interview with a young female passenger by grabbing Aislin’s microphone and yelling, ‘Welcome back to the Today show!’

The rival hosts later took a few good-natured jabs at each other during a rather flirty on-air exchange.

‘Sorry, I didn’t get your name before. I actually didn’t mean to get in your shot,’ Sam said with a devilish smile.

‘But your mic isn’t plugged in, so I win,’ singleton Sam teased.

Taking the situation in good humour, Aislin giggled and playfully slapped Sam’s shoulder – before suddenly realising she was still being filmed.

‘Are we live on the TV? Oh, are we doing a live cross?’ she yelped, turning to the Sunrise camera crew.

‘This is a two-camera shoot! I have dreamt of a two-camera shoot… Um, I’m sorry about butting in before, but you butted in first. Just a little bit of payback,’ he joked.

Responding with her own tongue-in-cheek jab, Aislin, who is married with children, declared: ‘Hey, Sam! Welcome to Queensland. Let the games begin.’

‘Oh… I love games,’ Sam coquettishly replied, before hurriedly wrapping up the conversation by saying: ‘Okay! This is getting weird.’
