James Blunt will not spend Christmas with his father after kidney transplant

‘We’re not risking anything’: James Blunt reveals he will not be spending Christmas with his isolating father, 74, following his kidney transplant

James Blunt has revealed that he will not be spending Christmas with his father, who has been isolating since his kidney transplant in January amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The singer, 46, said on Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain that he will not ‘risk anything’ by joining his unwell father, Charles Blount, 74, for the festive season.

Appearing via video link, he explained that even with the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine being approved for use in the UK, he still does not want to hinder his dad’s recovery.

Father: James Blunt has revealed that he will not be spending Christmas with his father, who has been self-isolating following his kidney transplant in January

Charles was given a kidney by his cousin and has been in isolation since getting his transplant due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

When asked by Piers Morgan how his father was doing, James explained: ‘He’s really well. Even with the news of the vaccine, I won’t be able to see him for Christmas.

‘He’ll be with my mother. We’ve gone so far, we’re not going to risk anything now.’

James has been staying at his house in Ibiza during the pandemic with his wife Sofia Wellesley, his mother-in-law, and his two young sons, whose names they have kept private.

Speaking about isolating on the Balearic island, he explained: ‘This pandemic has been worldwide and here in Spain, the numbers are really bad.

‘In Ibiza, it’s not as bad. All the clubs are closed.’

Amid the news of the Pfizer vaccine’s UK approval, Susanna, 49, asked James if people should get vaccines before attending concerts, when music venues reopen.

The musician lightheartedly quipped: ‘It’s not for me to say. Hopefully enough people will have it.

‘I’ll do the right thing, I’ll test my children first and if they don’t grow a third arm I’ll take it myself.’

The You’re Beautiful hitmaker has given fans regular updates on his father’s recovery from surgery amid the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain back in June, James revealed that he had not seen his father since his kidney transplant at the start of the year due to Covid-19.

He continued: ‘My father, Charles Blount, was given a kidney by a cousin [also] called Charles Blount. I haven’t seen him since January. He’s been in isolation. My mother is going slightly mad but he’s looking well.’

James was born James Hillier Blount but removed the ‘o’ from his surname to make it sound less fancy.

Appearing on the morning show back in April, he also thanked the NHS staff who helped his father, saying: ‘Thank you to the amazing surgeons, doctors and nurses.

‘In January, they gave my father a new kidney and he’s now in isolation much healthier and much more positive and thrilled thanks to those guys in Portsmouth.’

He even penned a song, The Greatest, in praise of frontline workers with proceeds from the single going to the NHS and the World Health Organisation.

James has also recently released his new book, How To Be a Complete and Utter Blunt, where he tries to persuade people not to take social media ‘seriously’.
