Having been a victim of domestic abuse from her relationship with ex Tosh, Tina recognised the signs and saw straight through Gray’s charms.

After an explosive confrontation in which Gray chased her around the house before eventually trapping her, the scene then showed Gray talking to Tina as she lay dead on the sofa.

He then set about cleaning up the evidence before loading her body into the car in a bid to get rid of her.

It was known that Tina was planning to do a runner after being implicated in the attack on Ian Beale.

So when her brother Mick Carter (Danny Dyer) called round, Gray easily convinced him that Tina had run away.

Talking to Mick after he craftily loaded Tina’s body into his car, he said: ‘She’s gone, she waited as long as she could. She got jumpy and thought you’d changed your mind. I tried to stop her going without seeing you and gave her all the money I could.’

Later, the police visited the house to talk to Tina, but Gray coolly revealed that Tina had ran away to Spain, before driving off.

At the end of the episode he joined Mick and Shirley Carter for a drink, sinisterly telling them that the police would never find their sister.

Watching the episode unfold, EastEnders fans took to Twitter in their droves, with many remarking they couldn’t believe that the character had such a heartbreaking exit.

‘Gutted that Tina has been killed off. I knew she was leaving but I was hoping they’d leave it so that she could maybe come back in the future. I loved her character’ commented one viewer.

Another remarked: ‘Not Tina, what a liberty!’, with a third insisting: ‘Tina deserved better.’

‘I want to say firstly TINA WAS ROBBED. I want to be happy she was part of a huge storyline but also, don’t think that should have ever been her exit. I wanted happiness. I wanted her to sail into the sunset’ shared a fourth.

‘WAIT, OMG GRAY KILLED TINA?! SERIOUSLY?! NOO this is actually insane… SOMEONE needs to find out it was Gray; get that murderer banged up! he can’t go around killing people just because they make him mad or get on the “wrong” side of him’ ranted a fifth watcher.

With another adding: ‘Gutted to see Tina go. What a horrible way to end her character and the actress was amazing.’

EastEnders continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
