The Great New Year Bake Off: Rahul Mandal looks STUNNED as he wins the show for the second time in seasonal special

Rahul Mandal was left stunned as he was crowned the winner of The Great British Bake Off’s New Year’s special on Sunday night.

Having already won the show in 2018, Rahul, 34, managed to reign supreme again, batting off other former contestants Nancy Birtwhistle, Henry Bird and Helena Garcia.

Nancy won the show’s fifth season, while Helena and Henry both appeared in season 10, in 2019.

Rahul dedicated his win to all the bakers who have been on the show in the past.

‘Without you, there would be no Bake Off family,’ he said.

Meanwhile, Henry, 21, declared that he felt ‘robbed’ following the winner announcement.

The contestants took on a trio of challenges for judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood.

Rahul seemed particularly shaky about it, saying: ‘I have never been this nervous in the tent. It’s so weird. I wasn’t even this nervous in the final!’

They were first tasked with producing a fruit crumble for a New Year’s Day feast, with Paul unearthing a large chunk of cinnamon in Rahul’s crumble.

‘The one bit of cinnamon and Paul Hollywood has to find it!’ he said after the challange.

Task two saw them making bao buns with a crispy shredded duck filling, which Nancy described as being ‘absolute hell’.

Rahul won that challenge, before the quartet took on the showstopper round, in which they each had to bake a cake representing their 21st birthdays.

Rahul explained that he barely celebrated his at the time as he was studying for exams when it happened.

Sunday’s edition was the second of two festive episodes of the much-loved show.

Rosie Brandreth-Poynter, Ruby Bhogal, James Hillery, and Jamie Finn featured on the show’s Christmas Eve episode last week.

Rosie was crowned the winner for the seasonal episode having reached the semi-finals of season 10.

On Monday 11 January, Junior Bake Off begins, on Channel 4 at 5PM.
