Tess and Vernon are parents to two daughters, Phoebe, 16, and Amber, 11, and have been spending lockdown together in their Buckinghamshire pad.

Vernon opened up about their lockdown experience on the Netmums Sweat, Snot and Tears podcast, as he discussed homeschooling, dad dancing, and the decision to keep their daughters out of the public eye.

Vernon admitted he has embraced ‘being himself’ during lockdown, as he revealed he feels the pressure is off and he can concentrate on family life.

Speaking on the podcast, he said: ‘The one thing that I think is good for our wellbeing in lockdown is that there’s no pressure to step out of your own personal mould and create something that isn’t you, i.e. following fashion trends…

‘Having that pressure of oh do I look nice, what will the other school parents at the school gate think when I rock up in this? We can be ourselves; we can be as slummy or as glam as we want in lockdown and I think that’s a real bonus, taking the pressure off yourself and throwing it into all things household.

‘I think that’s a real, real positive about lockdown.’

Vernon also joked about joining his girls for home schooling dance classes and trying to stay out of the camera away from the laptop.

He added: ‘Our kids are fortunate enough that every now and then they get a tutorial online with their teacher, which is great and helps massively, so being online with Daddy out of vision doing dance class is something quite special!’

During the pandemic Vernon was one of the contestants on the 2020 series of I’m A Celebrity.. Get Me Out Of Here! held for the first time in Wales.

Discussing what his daughters made of his appearance, he said: ‘We’ve got a sixteen-year-old. And if you revert back to when we were sixteen, peer pressure, being on trend, being respected by your peers and all that kind of stuff.

He said: ‘It was a big thing for Phoebe that I didn’t embarrass us when I went in there. I had the old “oh dad don’t do any of your dad jokes, don’t do any dad dancing”, all that kind of stuff I revel in at home, by embarrassing the kids by doing stupid gags.’

The former Family Fortunes host also revealed how his family welcomed him home after he finished the ITV show in third place.

Vernon said: ‘When I came home, they’d created a banner for me and they’d made cupcakes and they’d spelt I’m a Celebrity on the cupcakes and welcome home dad and they’d got a crown and they made cards, and I got the biggest squeeze from the girls, ever.

And Phoebe, she said, “Dad before you tell us anything, we’ve got to watch it together”, and on the Sky planner in every episode, she’d found the spot where I was involved in the show, and we went through all twenty episodes, and she’d got every single episode lined up for where I was in.

‘It was amazing, it was so cool. Then after that I had a million questions from both of them.’

Vernon also spoke about the decision to keep their daughters out of the spotlight, which he revealed they made when Tess was pregnant with Phoebe.

He said: ‘We didn’t want them to be thrust or thrown into the limelight. It was something we thought about and it was a decision we made very very early on that the girls’ lives should remain private.

‘When it comes down to brass tacks, being on telly is a job but it’s a job that’s different to most because you’ve got a lot of eyes and a lot of intrigue.

‘We made the decision early on that if we were ever out with the girls we would hide their faces, we would protect their faces. We wouldn’t do any of the magazines with the girls in them. We’ve made a conscious decision to keep them out of the limelight.’
