From Miley Cyrus’ edgy mullet to Winnie Harlow’s retro bangs: Hairstylist reveals 2021’s top trends

An Australian hairstylist to the stars has revealed some of the top hair trends to look out for in 2021. 

Mariah Rota, director of luxury hair salon Cole Hair Studio in Sydney’s Double Bay, told Daily Mail Australia that female mullets, retro bangs and natural curls are all coming back in. 

Ms Rota, whose regular clients include NRL WAG Terry Biviano and Real Housewives of Sydney star Krissy Marsh, said that celebrities like Miley Cyrus and model Winnie Harlow are leading the way with the latest hair trends.

Ever the chameleon, American singer Miley, 28, recently debuted her edgy new look after getting her long locks cut into a mullet. 

‘New hair. New Year. New music!’ the ex-wife of Liam Hemsworth boldly declared last month, as she showed off her new ‘do.

‘It’s not for everyone… but I mean, she really does look good with it and it suits her personality and she’s absolutely killing it,’ Ms Rota said. 

‘It’s the rockstar look, we’ve had a few people come into the salon who have done it and absolutely loved it. It’s a brave move.’

According to Ms Rota, a fringe is always ‘timeless’ and ‘isn’t that risky’ for those not daring enough to make a big or more permanent change to their tresses.

‘The ’60s fringe is the big one at the moment as it’s textured. They can sweep it to the side, it’s versatile and a really hot trend at the moment,’ Ms Rota said. 

‘It’s just not so thick, so not a thick bang, she’s rocking it.’ 

Ms Rota, whose clientele include MAFS star Martha Kalifatidis, jokingly added: ‘It saves you on Botox and things like that. Fringes bring out your eyes!’

THE NATURAL CURL

Ms Rota also said that the natural curl is making a comeback.

Ms Rota said many of her clients have been asking for curls and the secret to achieving the perfect spiral is products.   

‘Not everyone has them or the natural curls, but we can definitely achieve it with products and using small tongs, to get that body into it,’ Ms Rota said.

For tighter curls, she suggests a curl controlling treatment and anti-frizz creams.
