Waiters share the most AWKWARD dates they’ve witnessed while working in restaurants

Restaurant servers have shared details of the most awkward dates they’ve observed at their jobs — and just reading them is enough to make anyone cringe.

Reddit user u/Username-Checks-Outt posed the question — ‘Servers of Reddit, what’s the most awkward date you’ve seen unfold?’ — two years ago, and the thread has recently resurfaced on BuzzFeed.

The prompt earned thousands of comments, with one recalling a couple that broke up at the beginning of a meal — but continued to eat — and another detailing the time two cheating spouses brought their extramarital partners to the same restaurant at the same time.

Yikes! Restaurant servers have shared details of the most awkward dates they’ve observed at their jobs — and just reading them is enough to make anyone cringec

Some of the awkward stories that waiters shared were innocent enough, like uncomfortable but harmless physical contact.

‘I once saw a guy shake his date’s hand when she reached over to grab some bread,’ write one.

Another encountered a young couple who probably shouldn’t have even bothered on the date, considering the circumstances.

‘I had a teenage couple come accompanied by a parent,’ they wrote.

One had the misfortune of witnessing a breakup — which took place at the beginning of the meal.

‘He dumped her toward the beginning. Girl cried while giving her order. They finished their whole meal, dessert and all,’ they said.

Yet another breakup was even more spectacular, given that it came after a surprise proposal.

‘This guy waited for his ‘fiancé’ to show up, only to get on his knees and propose the moment she sat down,’ the former Olive Garden waiter wrote. ‘I immediately knew from the look on her face that things were going to go downhill real quick.

‘Everyone could hear them arguing, but mostly you could hear the woman repeatedly say, ‘YOU KNOW HOW I F****** FEEL ABOUT HIM!’ The fight continued until I heard a loud ‘OHHHHHH!!!’ She threw an entire plate of pasta at his face.

‘She stormed outside, he followed, and eventually the cops came and arrested the woman. I assume she was arrested for aggravated assault or something.’

One more man specifically planned to breakup with his girlfriend at the restaurant, even calling ahead to ask if they had a quiet space for an important conversation.

‘I just thought he meant a business meeting — nope. Turns out, he wanted to break up with his girlfriend of eight years,’ said the waiter. Halfway through, she started screaming and had to be escorted out. He ended up staying and meeting up with a new date about an hour later.’

In one case, it was the waiter, not either person on the date, who made it awkward. The waiter said they sat a young man no older than 25 and a woman in her early 60s or late 50s.

‘Midway through their meal, I went to check up on them asking, “Aw, are you taking Mom out today?” They both turned with straight faces, and the young man answered, “She’s my girlfriend.” I whispered an apology and just peeled myself away,’ they said.

One waiter watched on in horror as a woman went on a date with a man — and the spirit of her dead husband.

‘We had a middle-aged lady come in with a gentleman. They asked for three menus,’ they wrote.

‘I went over to the table to introduce myself and ask if they were waiting for one more. The woman said no her husband is here, and then the two physically at the table ordered drinks and a water.

‘The lady explained to me that her husband had died a few years ago, and this guy (a friend) kept asking to go out. So, she said yes but insisted that her DEAD HUSBAND come with them. This is why they had three menus.’

What’s more, the woman insisted that the waiter address her dead husband and take his dinner order.

One waiter recalled a clueless man who turned up to a date in a grey suit and the running shoes ‘where each individual toe goes into a separate spot like toe socks.’

It was such a turn-off that the woman saw him, turned around, and left before he’d even noticed she arrived. What made it awkward was that the waiter had to tell the man why his date had left.

Another man wasn’t just clueless but flat-out rude.

‘It was clearly a blind date. Neither of them were comfortable at all. I dropped off drinks, they both were polite, and then I dropped off the food, asked how everything was,’ the waiter said.

‘The guy rolled his eyes and said, “Well, the food is great. I just wish SHE would TALK more.” The girl’s face went tomato red, and I dropped off the check shortly after. Poor girl.’

Finally, one waiter remembered working in a ‘very upscale French restaurant in NYC’ when two cheating spouses collided.

A middle-aged man and a young woman had just received their entrées when the man’s face went white.

‘His date noticed and turned to see what he was looking at. The man’s wife was at another table — also on a date with her side piece — on the other side of the restaurant,’ the waiter wrote.

‘The wife sees him and has the same expression on her face, which very quickly turns to rage. She briskly walks over to his table and starts whisper-yelling at him, pointing her finger right in his face. He starts to do the same back at her.’

While the man’s date looked ‘absolutely mortified,’ the wife’s date pretended ‘nothing was happening’ and just kept eating.
