Peter Crouch reveals he used to LIE to wife Abbey Clancy to sneak on team nights out

Footballers are often known for their work hard, play hard attitudes.

And Peter Crouch gave an insight into how he would live by the adage as he spoke on his That Peter Crouch Podcast about having nights out without his wife Abbey Clancy’s permission – with the help of the club secretary.

The ex-England striker, 40, said: ‘There’s been a couple of occasions where there’s a bit of a team bonding session or something like that and Ab will say, ‘Don’t have to go to that do you?”, before he would lie about the night being compulsory.

Happy couple Peter and Abbey have been married for a decade and share Sophia, 10, Liberty, five, Johnny, four, and Jack, one.

He was giving a cheeky insight into the ways he would get around having nights out while juggling life as a dutiful husband and father.

Peter divulged: ‘There’s been a couple of occasions where there’s a bit of a team bonding session or something like that and Ab will say, “Don’t have to go to that do you?”, before he would lie about the night being compulsory…

‘I’ll be like, “Well, no, I do” so there has been one or two occasions where I’ve gone to the secretary: ‘Can you just fire an email just saying it’s compulsory and it’s important for the team?’. And we just go and have a night out.’

He also spoke about using match days as an excuse to get out of duties.

Peter said: “On a Friday it’s like the magical time to get out of anything because Saturday is the most important thing. You train all week to play on a Saturday…

‘I remember when my first baby was born and I was still playing. Friday night if she’s crying or something like that I’m like, “That’s not for me, I’ve got a game tomorrow”.

‘I had a set routine – I’d have to eat correctly, I’d have to go to bed early and no interruptions until I was ready to get up. To be fair Ab understood.”

Prior to his latest chat, Peter opened up about his dad duties in an interview with Rob Beckett and Josh Widdcombe’s Parenting Lockdown Hell in December as he admitted that his wife doesn’t trust him alone with their brood.

Speaking candidly about life in the Crouch-Clancy household, he said: ‘We’ve got some help, her mum is very good and we’ve got some family who can help us because I don’t think Abs would trust me fully on my own with all four’.

Abbey could be heard speaking in the background, as he added: ‘She’s looking at me now, oh yea did you hear that? She’s shouted over the top of me “what about that time you lost him at the farm?”

He said of the incident with son Jack: ‘We’re all in the farm and we’re with the toddlers, and you can’t get out of this little bit we’re in unless an adult presses the button, which is high enough for an adult to press…

‘Anyway a teenager, I thought he was fine playing where he is and teenagers obviously pressed the button and he’s gone out, now he’s out by the sheep now I’m sort of in the play bit.

‘It’s all covered and she’s gone “where’s Jack?” and I’ve gone, “he’s just… out by the sheep by the looks of it!” So there was a panic, but all good he didn’t go too far.’
