Australian cast of The Phantom Of The Opera share their excitement as they prepare to perform at the Sydney Opera House

The Phantom Of The Opera will return to the Australian theatre stage in September at the Sydney Opera house.

And the cast of the musical have shared their excitement at performing for a home crowd.

Josh Piterman, who will play The Phantom and has previously starred the famed role in the 2019 London West End version, told Stellar on Friday he is looking forward to playing the iconic role.

‘I think Phantom has stood the test of time because at its core, it’s the most deeply moving love story that music has ever told,’ he said.

The theatre actor will star alongside Amy Manford, who plays Christine Daaé and also starred in the same role with Piterman in the London West End version. 

‘When we finished, we looked at each other and said, ‘We’re going to do this again together, aren’t we?’ And here we are,’ she said, recalling their one-time show on the West End stage.

Meanwhile, Blake Bowden, who will play Raoul de Chagny, said he is thrilled that a new generation of theatre fans will get to experience this classic musical on-stage.

‘The show comes around every 10 years or so and people get excited because they remember that last time they saw it; now they get to take the next generation,’ she said.

The Phantom Of The Opera is one of a many musical theatre shows opening in Sydney.

Among the musicals to recently hit stages across the Harbour City include Frozen, Hamilton, Come From Away and The Wedding Singer.

The iconic AndrewLloyd Webber musical first premiered on Australia stages in 1990, starring Marina Prior opposite Anthony Warlow. It was revived in 2008 with Anthony reprising his role opposite Ana Marina.  

The Phantom Of The Opera will play at the Sydney Opera House from September 3, before moving to Melbourne’s Arts Centre for shows from November 14.
