Wellerman star Nathan Evans reveals he poked fun at Duke of Cambridge’s football team

EXCLUSIVE ‘I had a little dig at Aston Villa’: Wellerman star Nathan Evans reveals he poked fun at Duke of Cambridge’s football team after Wills and Kate requested personalised version of his viral Sea Shanty hit

The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall requested their own personalised Sea Shanty song to be performed at a music concert they were due to a attend.

Chart topper Nathan Evans, 26, the man behind No1 hit Wellerman, revealed the Royals are huge fans of the track, which is the biggest selling domestic single in the UK in 2021.

The former postman became an internet sensation by racking up millions of hits on TikTok, having filmed Sea Shanties on his phone in his bedroom, before Wellerman was eventually released and clocked up over half a billion streams.

The Scot also performed Wellerman with Ant and Dec on Saturday Night Takeaway and alongside Jack Whitehall at the BRIT Awards, as TV bosses capitalised on its viral success.

Nathan told MailOnline: ‘William and Kate contacted my manager and asked if there was any chance I could write a Sea Shanty for them and I said ‘yeah, why not.’

‘The first verse was how crazy it was performing for the Royals and how I never thought I’d be in that situation, something like ‘there once was a boy from Airdrie town who sang some songs the internet found.’

‘The second one had a little dig at Aston Villa, because I know William supports them.’

Nathan was due to perform the Royals-inspired version of Wellerman at a gig held at Barrowlands in Glasgow earlier this year, with Prince William and Kate Middleton watching on.

However the concert was cancelled after the Scottish city was placed in Level 2, meaning all indoor gigs were postponed.

Nathan is hopeful Wills and Kate will be able to hear the track at the rescheduled gig, adding: ‘I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.’

The singer releases the follow up to Wellerman today, a brand new single called Told You So. In a move which will surprise fans, he’s moving away from the Sea Shanties with the track, which has more of a rock feel.

Explaining his decision, Nathan said: ‘It shows off my voice a little bit more. The general perception is that I only do Sea Shanties, but this will show people I can actually sing and can write songs. Hopefully I’ll be able to prove I’m an actual artist and I’m here to stay.’

Nathan filmed the new video for Told You So, in which MailOnline has obtained exclusive behind-the-scenes pictures, in a variety of locations including London, Brighton, Seaford, Newhaven, Haywards Heath, Crawley, West Wickham and Crystal Palace.

And he hopes fans will be impressed, ensuring he’s no one-hit wonder.

Nathan, who embarks on a British Tour later his year, said: ‘I’m really nervous. After success of the first one, expectations are really high and everybody will want to see if the follow up is as good.

‘But it’s also exciting as well, to see whether people will like it. There will be some people out there who’ll be disappointed it’s not a Sea Shanty, but not too many. My aim is not to be a one-hit wonder.’
