Birds of Tokyo’s halftime performance PANNED by AFL Grand Final viewers

‘Like buying Coldplay on Wish’: Birds of Tokyo’s halftime performance is PANNED by AFL Grand Final viewers who say they ‘butchered’ Silverchair cover

Birds Of Tokyo commanded the stage for the AFL Grand Final show at Perth Stadium on Saturday.

The Western Australian band performed one of their biggest hits, Lanterns, backed by an orchestra, making for a dazzling moment.

But it was when they took on a cover of the Silverchair song Straight Lines that the claws came out among the viewers.

Many posted on social media panning the performance, with Silverchair fans insisting that singer Ian Kenny didn’t match up to the Newcastle band’s frontman, Daniel Johns.

One person Tweeted: ‘The worst cover of a Silverchair song ever!’ while another agreed: ‘Please, do not touch Silverchair. They are sacred.’

Another complained: ‘Could’ve been a flex doing a Silverchair cover if he actually knew the damn words and wasn’t looking down.’

Someone else Tweeted: ‘The 13 year old son who loves Silverchair is absolutely losing his s**t at this butchering right now and I’m here for it!!’

One more agreed: ‘Nice touch in the half time show showing love to Silverchair, but Birds of Tokyo just proved that there is only one Daniel Johns.’

Others were left underwhelmed by the band themselves and compared them to a cheap version of Coldplay.

‘What is this, the Wish version of Coldplay at the halftime show?’ one viewer wrote, while another said: ‘Is this what passes as music these days???’

‘Okay, so never heard #BirdsofTokyo before and I’ll never hear them again if I can help it,’ someone chimed in.

One more Tweeted: ‘I have no idea who this band are, but my got they’re utterly insipid. They make @coldplay look cutting edge.’

However others enjoyed the show, with one person writing: ‘Birds of Tokyo nailed it!’ while another said: ‘Halftime show done right. Think we need to move to Perth!’
