McDonald’s Australia has taken on fast food giant KFC with the launch of its own new range of Southern-style fried chicken.

The fast food restaurant is quietly trialling the ‘exclusive’ menu item at select stores across New South Wales and South Australia.

‘It’s part of our commitment to growing our chicken menu and giving our customers even more choice,’ a McDonald’s spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia.

‘We look forward to receiving customer feedback on the trial.’

Food blogger Adrian Widjonarko got his hands on a three-piece fried chicken meal for $13.30 after he discovered the new menu item at the Waterloo outlet in Sydney.

‘Finally I am trying this exclusive Maccas Southern-style fried chicken, looks so good. Let’s see how it is,’ he said in his TikTok video.

‘I got the three pieces as a meal – it was $13.30. It is so good. I personally love it. It’s a must try.’

The chicken comes in various options – including a one piece for $3.20, five-piece for $13.95 or a 10-piece for $25.95.

His video has since been viewed more than 60,000 times, with many saying they couldn’t wait to try the new fried chicken.

When asked whether KFC or McDonald’s was better, Adrian responded: ‘I like this but also KFC – I can’t choose, I’d eat them both.’

Some Aussies said they remember ordering fried chicken from Maccas growing up.

‘Many moons ago, they would sell chicken on their menu… Don’t know why they got rid of it,’ one woman wrote, while another added: ‘They used to have chicken on the menu back in the 80s.’
