Conor McGregor has made an ‘amazing recovery’ from his broken leg he suffered in July, reveals his training partner Peter Queally, who says the Irishman is ‘reaping the rewards’ of the hard work he is putting in at the gym.

‘Notorious’ suffered an agonising leg break during his defeat to Dustin Poirier in the summer, with the fight being called off following a doctor’s stoppage, and McGregor is now working hard to bounce back and kickstart his career after two defeats.

Bellator fighter Queally, a long time training partner of McGregor’s, hailed the Irishman’s progress and said the strides he was making towards his comeback were ‘not shocking’ because of the effort he had put in.

‘He looks amazing already,’ he told Sky Sports. ‘You’ve seen yourself the videos of him hitting pads and he’s had an amazing recovery from what I understand.

‘It’s amazing. It’s not shocking because whatever he does, he does it full on and that’s no different to a recovery. I’ve recovered from some serious injuries in the past as well and it’s all about what you put into these.

‘And he’s clearly put a lot into recovering from this and he’s reaping the rewards from it now, so I can definitely see him back and he will be back at some stage next year.’

Queally – known as The Showstopper – who faces a clash against Patricky Pitbull for the lightweight title this week, said MMA was a testing sport with lots of setbacks, but said persistence was key to prevailing.

‘The thing with MMA is you have to stay at it. I have a lot of friends in the gym who quit too early. They had some setbacks and got back on the horse and got going again, then they had another set back and then they quit. I’ve had five or six critical set backs in my career but I never quit, that’s why I’m here. You just have to perservere, and you’ll get there. I think I’m proof of that.

McGregor this week shared footage of his leg break and claims it was broken ‘before he even stood up’, as his insists ‘the fight was going my way’ prior to the injury as he targets a 2022 comeback.

‘Good angle,’ he wrote on Twitter, accompanied by the clip. ‘Can see the leg was broke before I even stood up. It was broke before the guillotine even.

‘It’s why I went for it. Four shots to zero here in this clip to close the fight before the injury. This fight was going my way 100 per cent. But big congrats lads hahaha ye right. Rats.

‘Can see the weight in those upkicks he was eating here as well. Which weren’t even the two heaviest upkicks I landed. Where was he going from open guard top here?

‘He not like upkicks thru the face? Elbows down thru the crown? No like? Tough s**t, see ya soon.’

Speaking to Adam Glyn in September, McGregor said he was feeling positive about his comeback and ‘felt like he could kick right now’.

‘I feel like I could kick right now,’ he said. ‘I honestly feel like I could kick right now. But I’ve just got to listen to the doctors and listen to the people that guided me, that’s what I’ve done so far.

‘I’ve committed myself to the work. I’m back on the feet. It feels so good to be back on the feet.’
