City would likely switch Joao Cancelo to the right-hand side and call on Oleksandr Zinchenko at left back if the England international does not prove his fitness for the trip to Old Trafford.

Guardiola, who refused to criticise the tight turnaround ahead of Saturday’s 12:30 kick-off, has seen Phil Foden flourish as a false nine in recent weeks.

Foden scored his fifth of the campaign in midweek and believes the Champions League victory has put City in the right frame of mind before meeting United.

‘We needed to bounce back from previous defeats so it is going to give us confidence going into the derby,’ Foden said.

‘We’re ready to play them whenever. It’s going to be a difficult game because we know how hard it is at their stadium with their fans but we’re feeling confident.’
