Anthony Joshua has been told exactly how to go out and beat Oleksandr Usyk in his must-win re-match showdown, by a man who has been there and done it all before.

Michael Hunter rebuilt his career following a points defeat to the Ukrainian in 2017, which remained the only blemish on his boxing record.

Now, Hunter has insisted that he knew AJ would go out and lose the first fight and surrender his title belts, but has outlined just how he can go about retrieving them and climb back atop boxing’s podium.

It went exactly as I said it was going to go,’ Hunter told Sky Sports.

‘Anthony Joshua did exactly what I said. The game-plan that he came out with, the strategic game-plan, or his trainers, I wouldn’t put it all on him.

‘To go out there and try and box a pure boxer was not the best move for him, but I think he can improve in the next fight.

‘It’s funny, because when he was doing his rounds, I was like, “I wish he could just take a trip over right where I’m at right now. I wish I could be his trainer.”

Joshua is now in the process of re-entering training in order to prepare to face Usyk again early next year after activating a clause for an immediate rematch with his former WBA, IBF and WBO titles back on the line.

Hunter added: ‘I just think that I would be able to teach him a lot of different things, or show him a lot of different things, because he’s a fighter obviously but I feel like he doesn’t really know the laws of fighting.

‘He knows the rules, but I feel like he doesn’t know how to apply the laws of fighting.’

Speaking recently to the Independent, Usyk himself confirmed the second showdown with Joshua is likely to take place in spring.

He said: ‘The rematch is going to happen. The promoters are going to deal with the dates and everything. The nearest it will be is spring, or close to that.

‘I don’t think about my opponents or their changes. I think about myself and how I can become at least a little bit better every day.

‘I had felt amazing backstage, I enjoyed the walk to the ring… and even when I saw the crowd cheering, it didn’t matter if it was pro-Joshua or not. The night was a perfect ensemble of everything that happened that day.’
