Grant Shapps has revealed he was taken to hospital and needed an operation on his face after he fell off his bike while out at the weekend near his Home Counties constituency.
The Transport Secretary voiced his relief that he was wearing a helmet at the time as it stopped his injuries from being ‘much worse’.
Shapps, the Conservative MP for Welwyn Hatfield, Hertfordshire, revealed he had an operation on his lip after coming off his bike.
He said he had been ‘patched up’ by ‘brilliant’ NHS staff after being in and out of the QEII hospital in Welwyn Garden City and the Lister Hospital near Stevenage following the incident.

Shapps said on Twitter: ‘In and out of hospital after coming off my bike while out this weekend. Big thanks to brilliant NHS staff at QEII and Lister Hospitals who patched me up yesterday, followed by a minor op on my lip today.
‘Thank goodness for bike helmet, without which it could have been much worse!’
Scores of people wished Shapps a speedy recovery, with some urging him to publicise the need to wear helmets while cycling more.
Labour MP Karl Turner tweeted: ‘Hope you recover speedily.’
One Twitter user said: ‘Please publicise this more Grant. Lots of people on pushbikes this weekend valued at £5k and yet won’t pay £20 for a helmet. Glad you are safe and recovering.’
Another user wrote: ‘Perhaps you can use this experience to make these law, thankfully you are safe but sadly not everyone will wear one.’
