SHORTCUT TO STYLE

Prepare yourself for a fashion trick so effective it will revolutionise your life for ever (and by for ever I mean until spring). Yes, I’m talking about the simple act of chucking on a poncho.

NO MORE MESSY LAYERS

Everyone knows the secret to dressing in winter is layering. Yet everyone also knows that layering looks messy and means you can’t get your arms into any coat that isn’t an anorak.

Chuck on a poncho, however, and it will keep you warm and stylish, anywhere from Bond Street to the Peruvian Andes.

BLANKET APPROVAL

We have Etro, Jil Sander, Dior, Max Mara and many more to thank. Somehow, they have made an over- sized blanket with a hole in it the most fashionable thing to be seen in this winter.

Pull it on over anything — dresses, jeans, tailored trousers and, of course, pyjamas if you want to save on the gas bill. Ponchos are completely acceptable for work or play, in civilised company or at home alone. They are designed to keep you toasty but not limit movement — and that’s exactly what I want this winter.

ONE SIZE FITS ALL

I’m a big fan of the bold, colourful, eye-catching design I’m wearing on the right, from Zara, but there are plenty of understated options to choose from which are slightly more practical and considerably less ‘look at me’.

Easy, uncomplicated, comforting and, of course, one size fits all. Really, what more could you ask for?
