Ian Wright has heaped praise on Aaron Ramsdale by describing the Arsenal goalkeeper as a ‘phenomenon’ following his superb start to life at the Emirates.

Ramsdale has been a revelation since joining the Gunners in a £30million deal from Sheffield United earlier this summer and he is yet to lose a game for his new club.

However, while he has been one of Arsenal’s standout players this season, his move to the Emirates was met with plenty of raised eyebrows with fans questioning why the club had splashed out so much on a goalkeeper that had been relegated from the Premier League twice before.

But after displacing Bernd Leno as Mikel Arteta’s No 1 having conceded just four times in eight matches while keeping five clean sheets, Wright has lauded the 23-year-old for proving his doubters wrong and earning his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

‘Ramsdale is a phenomenon for Arsenal for what he has done,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.

‘I am really pleased that it is turning out like it has for him because when we signed him for £30 million, people were teasing Arsenal, saying, “How can you sign a goalkeeper that has gone down twice?”

‘What I see is a goalkeeper that brings so much to the team, not just his brilliant goalkeeping at the moment, but his attitude and the fact that he is that chest-beating, he gets the team going.

‘Because I think there are a lot of introverted players at Arsenal, and he is somebody that, he keeps Arsenal going.’

Arteta revealed last week that one of the main reasons he brought Ramsdale to the club was because of his personality.

‘Obviously we needed to identify where we can get better and what we were missing or how we want to mould our experience and our leadership,’ said the Spaniard.

‘And that is all obviously about personalities and the people you bring into the club, and we thought that Aaron could be very beneficial.

‘I watched a lot of clips and moments after he conceded a goal, making a mistake or a difficult moment, and that’s one of the big reasons that we made a decision to sign him because he could cope with those.’

Ramsdale is in line to make his senior England debut on Friday night when the Three Lions welcome Albania to Wembley for their World Cup qualifier.
